Ginger Wildheart is a busy man. 2012 saw the release of his solo Pledge Triple album 555% and the recording of the Hey Hello! noise pop record and the Mutation noise metal double album due to be released in 2013. And that’s just in one year.
Ginger is also the leader of British Rock legends The Wildhearts, who in April will embark on a four date tour for the 20th Anniversary of their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Earth Vs’, followed by dates in New York and Tokyo.
His fan-funded triple album 555%, so named from how much it exceeded the original funding target, sent shockwaves through the music industry, earning the Classic Rock ‘Event of the Year’ award in the process. Recorded in three sessions with separate groups of musicians and comprised of 30 songs of a whole range of styles showcasing Ginger’s songwriting range. Track by track voting from 555% fans led to the creation of an abridged 12 song version, 100%, for commercial release.
555% was followed with a Pledge campaign featuring two vastly different projects.
Firstly Hey! Hello! features Ginger writing and recording the entire album, including the drum tracks. Says Ginger: “Hey! Hello! allowed me to enter the world of lyrical fiction – much in the vein of Sparks, who are a massive influence of mine.” It also allowed Ginger to carry on in the world of ridiculously catchy songs, as Swimwear ably demonstrates.
The second project is Mutation, the darkness to the light that is Hey! Hello!, an experimental extreme metal double album, with contributors including members of Napalm Death, Hawkeyes and the infamous Mark E. Smith among many others.
And that’s just this decade! In the beginning there were The Wildhearts, an anarchic and hard to define band, garnering comparisons such as Metallica meets The Beatles. The first charge, from the early 1990’s to 1997 created classic albums ‘Earth Vs The Wildhearts’, ‘PHUQ’ and the ahead of its time racket of ‘Endless Nameless’. The band reformed in 2001, touring extensively including European & US tours with The Darkness and releasing albums including ‘The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed’, ‘The Wildhearts’ and ‘Chutzpah!’
Along the way, Ginger has contributed to many other bands and projects, including writing songs for Jason and the Scorchers, writing and touring with Michael Monroe, three solo albums before 555% (‘Valor Del Corazon’, ‘Yoni’ and ‘Market Harbour’) and the glam rock spectacle of Silver Ginger 5 with Conny Bloom.
Ginger was born to write and play music and the next project is just over the next hill, so strap yourself in and enjoy the ride!
